Before the winter break, the Real Madrid team was highly
rated with Fabio Capello even daring to say that they might be better than the
Guardiola’s Barcelona. Fast-Forward to 2015, they started the year with a
defeat to Valencia at the Mestalla. It only got worse as they crashed out of
the copa del rey in the hand of City rivals Atletico Madrid.
Since then, they
have been winning even though some were hard-fought.
However, the draw to
Villareal last week saw Barcelona close up on them with only a point between.
The matter could only get worse as they lost at the san mames to Athletic
Bilbao whom they dispatched 5-0 in the reverse fixture in 2014.
On the other hand, before the winter break, Luis Enrique was
heavily criticized with threats of sack already looming due to a bust up with Messi.
Since them the tides have turned. They beat Atletico madrid to qualify for the
next round of the copa del rey leaving them as the favourite as madrid had
crashed out earlier. They went on an 11 match unbeaten which only marred by
defeat to Malaga, but for them to produce another world class display in the
first leg tie of last 16 of the champions’ league against Manchester city. With
Madrid having lost to Athletic Bilbao, they have a chance to go top of the
table when they play rayo vallecano on Sunday.
